A competitive rate matters. So does understanding the full quote. Put the details side by side before deciding how to finance your next car.
Start with the same assumptions
Ask for quotes using the same amount borrowed and loan term. Note the repayment frequency and any final payment. This gives you a useful starting point for the conversation rather than comparing two different borrowing plans.
Know which rate you are looking at
The interest rate excludes fees. A comparison rate combines interest and most fees, using stated assumptions. It is a guide, and changing the loan amount or term can change the result. Ask for those assumptions and the costs for your own proposed loan.
Ask for a full fee breakdown
Car finance can involve lender, broker or introducer fees, as well as ongoing charges. Ask who receives each fee and whether it is paid upfront or included in the borrowing. Request a written breakdown.
Check the term and any balloon payment
A longer term may reduce regular repayments while increasing total interest. Check any early repayment costs if you plan to finish sooner.
A balloon leaves a lump sum due at the end. It can reduce regular repayments but generally increases total loan cost. Have a realistic plan to pay it when due.
Take this question list to your broker
- What is the total amount I will repay, including the final payment?
- Which fees are included in that total?
- Is the rate fixed or variable?
- What happens if I make extra repayments or pay the loan out early?
- What conditions must be met before approval and settlement?
Write the answers beside each quote. If a figure or condition is unclear, ask for an explanation before signing. Keep the final documents with the quote you used for your comparison.
