Before financing an electric vehicle, check where you will charge it and budget for any installation work as well as electricity. A car that fits your repayment budget may still need a charging arrangement that suits your parking, home and driving routine.
Check access before choosing equipment
Write down where the car normally parks and how long it stays there. Include your regular driving distance and any longer trips, then work out whether charging can fit around those routines.
The Australian Government’s home and strata charging guidance explains that a dedicated home charger needs a licensed electrician and may require switchboard or supply upgrades. A standard power point may meet some drivers’ needs, but ask an electrician to assess whether your setup is safe and suitable.
In an apartment or shared building, check the required approvals before treating an installation as a certainty. If you rent, clarify the process with your landlord or property manager too.
Get a quote for the whole installation
Ask for an itemised quote that separates the charger from installation and any required electrical work. Confirm what is included, what still needs assessment and whether the proposed equipment is compatible with your vehicle.
Put the upfront charging costs beside the car price, transfer costs, insurance and your available savings. Keep this separate from an advertised vehicle repayment so you can see the full purchase budget.
Do not assume a car-loan quote includes home electrical work. Ask what the proposed finance covers before committing to either purchase.
Estimate electricity costs using your tariff
The Australian Government’s Green Vehicle Guide explains how its home charging calculator estimates time and cost using charger output, battery size and your electricity tariff. Charging time also depends on the vehicle’s acceptance rate and settings.
Use the tariff that applies when you expect to charge, rather than a cheap rate available at times you cannot use. Treat the result as an estimate and allow for your actual charging pattern. Our car running-cost budget guide helps keep other ownership expenses in view.
Price a practical backup
Identify a compatible public charging option near your usual route. Check its current price and any idle fees, and allow time for charging. The government’s EV charging guide highlights compatibility, availability and possible idle charges as planning checks.
