The Consumer Price Index (CPI) can help you understand broad price changes, but it does not tell you exactly how much your own car budget has changed. Before borrowing, use current quotes and your actual spending to check what fits alongside the repayments.
What is the next inflation update?
As checked on 27 October 2026, the ABS release calendar schedules the September 2026 CPI for 28 October at 11:30 am AEDT. Those September figures have not been released at the time of writing.
When reading the update, check which period a percentage describes. A change from the previous month and a change over twelve months answer different questions. Neither is a quote for your next tank of fuel or insurance renewal.
Why might your costs feel different?
The ABS explains that CPI combines prices across a representative household basket using spending weights. It covers capital-city households and is not designed to match a particular person or family.
Your driving distance, vehicle, insurance cover and mix of household bills can differ from that basket. A longer commute can raise your fuel spending even if the price per litre stays the same. That is a change in how much you use, not necessarily a price increase.
Treat the headline as context. Do not simply multiply every line of your budget by the same inflation percentage.
Turn the headline into three personal checks
First, compare recent fuel or charging spending with an earlier period of similar driving. Note changes in both price and kilometres so you can explain any difference.
Second, replace old estimates with current quotes for the vehicle you are considering. Check insurance, registration and likely servicing costs separately; an economy-wide figure cannot confirm those amounts.
Third, review the household bills competing for the same income. Keep annual bills visible by setting aside a regular amount, while still recording their actual due dates. Our car running-cost budget guide provides a fuller checklist.
Check the loan figures separately
ASIC’s Moneysmart car-loan guidance recommends considering fees, repayments and other vehicle costs before signing. A CPI announcement is not a lender’s borrowing rate or a revised repayment schedule.
For a proposed loan, use the actual quote and ask what could change before settlement. For an existing loan, follow your lender’s confirmed payment arrangements.
