Before buying a caravan, check whether your tow vehicle can safely carry and tow your planned loaded setup. Include any necessary equipment and ongoing ownership costs in your budget before deciding how much to borrow.
Check the loaded combination, not just the brochure
The Queensland Government’s towing guide says the vehicle handbook usually specifies towing limits and suitable trailer features. Check those limits alongside the caravan specifications and the ratings of the towbar and coupling.
Allow for passengers, water, luggage and fitted accessories. An empty caravan’s weight does not describe a fully packed holiday setup, and equipment carried in the car also matters.
Ask a qualified towing specialist to assess the proposed combination if the figures are unclear. Queensland’s guidance recommends weighing the trailer and load when you are unsure of their combined mass. Do not rely on a seller’s general assurance that your car “should be fine”.
Match the caravan to its paperwork
For a used caravan, compare its trailer plate and vehicle identification number (VIN) with the registration documents. The Queensland Government’s caravan-buying checklist warns that missing or altered identifiers can signal a stolen or rebirthed caravan.
If numbers do not match, resolve that before proceeding. Keep copies of the documents and arrange an independent condition inspection. This is a separate question from whether the caravan can be towed by your vehicle.
Budget for the setup as well as the purchase
Write a purchase plan with three separate amounts: the caravan price, immediate setup costs and ongoing expenses. Get quotes for any required towing equipment or repairs rather than assuming the advertised price covers everything.
Include registration, insurance, servicing and storage where relevant. Ask yourself what changes if a suitable setup requires a different tow vehicle. That is a second purchase decision, not a small extra to overlook.
Keep money for unexpected costs in view when deciding how much of your savings to contribute.
Compare finance after you know the full cost
Once the purchase plan is clear, request figures for the actual amount you need. ASIC’s Moneysmart personal-loan guide explains that a longer term may reduce regular repayments while increasing total cost. Check fees and any early-repayment conditions too.
Our guide to comparing vehicle-loan quotes offers questions to put alongside the repayment figure.
