If your car-loan application is rejected, ask why before sending another application. Check the information used in the decision, revisit your budget and work out what needs to change before trying again.
Ask what led to the decision
A refusal is not automatically a credit-score problem. Income, expenses, existing debts and credit history can all affect a lender’s assessment, according to Moneysmart’s loan-rejection guide.
Ask whether the issue relates to your credit report or your capacity to repay. Keep the response with your application paperwork so you can discuss the actual concern, rather than guessing. If a lender rejects an application because of your credit report, Moneysmart says it must tell you.
Check the report behind the decision
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner says you can request a free credit report every three months. You can also request a free copy if you have been refused credit in the past 90 days.
Credit reporting bodies may hold different information, so one report may not give the whole picture. Check that the accounts belong to you and flag errors for correction. Our credit-report checklist explains what to review before another application.
Rebuild the budget around real expenses
Use recent statements to list your take-home income, essential expenses and existing repayments. Include costs that arrive less often, such as registration, servicing and annual insurance, rather than treating an unusually cheap week as typical.
Moneysmart’s budgeting guide recommends recording income, regular bills, debt repayments and irregular costs. Our car running-cost guide can help you account for the vehicle expenses alongside a proposed repayment.
Write down what a cheaper vehicle or a later purchase would change. Keep a savings buffer in view instead of assuming every spare dollar is available for repayments.
Make the next enquiry deliberate
Repeated credit applications can affect your credit score. Moneysmart recommends allowing time to improve your position before applying again; simply sending the same information elsewhere may leave the original issue unresolved.
Before authorising another application, ask what has changed and whether the next step involves a credit enquiry. Prepare the lender’s feedback, current income information and your revised budget for that conversation.
Aussie Loans is a finance broker. Our team can discuss your circumstances and the questions to resolve before a further application. Approval is not guaranteed; lender criteria, rates and fees vary.
