Optional insurance and warranty extras can increase your car loan if their cost is added to the amount borrowed. Before agreeing, ask for an itemised price and compare the loan with and without each extra, including interest over the full term.
Separate the car price from the extras
A single repayment figure can hide several separate decisions. Ask for a written breakdown showing the vehicle price, fees, each optional product and the final amount financed.
For every extra, write down its cash price and what it does. Then ask: “Can I remove this item, and what would the revised loan figures be?” Keep the revised quote so you can check the final paperwork against your choice.
Our guide to comparing car-loan quotes explains why the headline repayment is only part of the picture.
Check the borrowing cost as well as the premium
ASIC’s Moneysmart add-on car insurance guide explains that financing an insurance premium adds interest to its cost. Optional cover can include tyre and rim damage, mechanical breakdown or certain loan-repayment risks.
Request two written calculations using the same loan term: one with the optional product and one without it. Compare the amount borrowed, regular repayments and total repayments, including any final lump sum. Check whether any other quote conditions changed too.
A useful extra question is: “When does this cover end compared with the loan?” Record both dates rather than assuming they match.
Ask what protection is genuinely additional
Read the policy or warranty terms before deciding. Check exclusions, claim limits, eligibility and any overlap with cover you already hold. Ask for clarification in writing if a description such as “protection package” does not explain the product.
For an extended warranty, the ACCC’s warranty guidance says it is optional and may not provide extra rights beyond automatic consumer guarantees. A warranty cannot remove those rights. Ask what specific additional benefit you are paying for.
Keep the insurance decisions separate
Optional add-ons are a separate decision from arranging appropriate car insurance and meeting any insurance condition in your loan contract. Our insurance-before-pickup checklist covers that step.
Before signing, match the final amount financed to the products you actually selected. If something is unclear, request an explanation and corrected paperwork before proceeding.
