Before collecting a financed car, confirm the lender’s insurance requirements and arrange any required cover to start before handover. Compulsory third party (CTP) insurance covers injuries to people, not damage to cars or property, so registration alone does not settle the question.
Which cover does your loan require?
A lender may require comprehensive insurance as a condition of the loan. Check your actual loan terms and ask what evidence of cover is needed before settlement. The ADF Financial Services Consumer Centre explains that lenders can require comprehensive cover but cannot insist on a particular insurer.
Keep the finance and insurance questions together when planning collection. A confirmed pickup time is useful only once you know when the loan can settle and when the policy begins. Our guide to secured and unsecured car loans explains the different loan structures.
What would the policy actually pay?
Comprehensive insurance generally covers damage to your car and other people’s vehicles or property, subject to the policy. Read its exclusions and check the excess you would need to pay when claiming.
Also check whether the car is insured for an agreed value or market value. These are different ways of valuing the vehicle; neither should be assumed to match your outstanding loan balance. Moneysmart’s car insurance guide explains the cover types and valuation choices.
Are optional add-ons in the quote?
Ask for an itemised quote separating the vehicle, finance charges and any optional insurance products. Required comprehensive cover and optional add-ons are different decisions.
Moneysmart warns that add-on insurance premiums included in a car loan attract interest, increasing their cost. Ask what you can decline, what each product covers and whether you already have overlapping protection. Take time to read the documents before agreeing.
What should you confirm before pickup?
Keep a simple handover note: the vehicle details, lender’s insurance requirements, policy start date and time, excess, and where your confirmation documents are saved. Give accurate information about who will drive the car and how it will be used, and ask the insurer to explain anything unclear.
Allow for the premium alongside repayments in your car running-cost budget. Aussie Loans is a finance broker; our team can help explain the finance requirements while you confirm insurance cover with the insurer.
