An RBA cash-rate rise does not automatically change every car-loan repayment. The effect on your loan depends on whether your rate is fixed or variable and on your lender's terms.
What changed in September?
On 29 September 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its cash-rate target by 0.25 percentage points to 4.60%. That is the September decision, not a new October announcement.
The cash rate concerns overnight borrowing between financial institutions. It is not a car-loan offer. The RBA's explanation of monetary-policy transmission says it influences lending rates, alongside other factors. Do not add 0.25 percentage points to your contract rate and assume that is your new rate.
Will my existing car-loan repayment increase?
Start with the rate type in your contract. ASIC's Moneysmart car-loan guide explains that a fixed rate keeps the interest rate and scheduled repayments unchanged. A variable-rate loan can have higher or lower repayments when the lender changes its variable rate.
For an existing fixed-rate loan, an RBA announcement alone does not reset the agreed fixed rate. For a variable-rate loan, check your lender's notice for the actual change, its effective date and the new repayment amount.
Keep meeting your existing repayment instructions until your lender confirms any change. If a notice is unclear, ask the lender to explain the amount and timing before adjusting your budget or payment arrangements.
What if I am still shopping for finance?
Treat a quote as a dated document. Ask how long it is valid, what conditions remain and when the offered rate becomes binding. A fixed-rate option you have discussed is not the same as an existing fixed-rate contract.
Request updated figures if your purchase date or borrowing amount changes. Our guide to comparing car-loan quotes covers the broader costs to check alongside the rate.
What should I do this weekend?
Find your contract or latest quote and write down three things: the rate type, the next repayment and any date requiring action. For a variable loan, ask what a higher repayment would mean for your budget. Leave room for fuel, insurance and servicing too.
