Before buying a used boat, check the boat’s identity, investigate any registered security interests and arrange an independent condition inspection. Treat the trailer and outboard motor as separate checks, even when the seller offers everything as one package.
Start with the boat’s identity
Find the hull identification number (HIN), or official number where applicable, and compare it with the seller’s documents. Enter it carefully when searching the Australian Government’s PPSR boat register.
A boat search can show a registered security interest, but it does not tell you the debt balance or confirm that the boat is undamaged or not stolen. Search close to purchase and save the certificate. If an interest appears, clarify it with the seller and the secured party before proceeding.
Check the trailer and motor separately
A watercraft search does not return security interests registered against the trailer. Use the trailer’s vehicle identifier, usually its VIN, for a separate PPSR vehicle search.
Interests registered against an outboard motor itself also do not appear in the boat search. PPSR guidance explains that these are searched against the relevant person or organisation. Seek help if the correct search is unclear rather than treating one clear certificate as covering the whole package.
Arrange your own condition inspection
Paperwork cannot tell you whether the hull, engine and equipment suit your plans. Maritime Safety Queensland’s boat-buying guide recommends an inspection by someone with appropriate marine knowledge when you lack the experience yourself. Arrange it independently of the seller.
Discuss where you will use the boat and how you will transport it. The same guide stresses checking that your car and trailer can tow the boat. Include any necessary repairs or equipment in your purchase budget.
Confirm the paperwork and finance before handover
In Queensland, a recreational boat buyer must transfer the ownership details within 14 days. A registered trailer requires its own registration transfer. Check the Queensland Government’s transfer guidance; requirements elsewhere may differ.
Ask for the sale paperwork to identify what is included, and keep the inspection report, search certificates and finance documents together. Before agreeing to a handover date, ask your broker what conditions and documents remain outstanding.
