You can usually pay off a car loan early, but check your contract for fees and ask your lender for a dated payout figure. Confirm that final amount before transferring money, rather than relying only on the balance shown in your banking app.
Are extra repayments and a full payout treated differently?
An extra repayment reduces what you owe while the loan continues. A full payout is intended to clear the debt and close the account, so ask about the conditions for each separately.
ASIC's Moneysmart personal-loan guide explains that additional payments can reduce interest and shorten the loan, but fees or limits may apply. Fixed-rate loans may charge an early repayment fee.
Ask your lender: “What would you charge if I paid a little extra each month, and what would you charge if I cleared the whole loan now?” Request the answers for your existing contract.
Why do I need a payout figure?
A statement balance may not include everything needed to close the loan. For example, Westpac's loan-management guide explains that its payout calculation includes the outstanding balance, interest owing at repayment and applicable charges, using the intended payment date and method.
Your lender's process may differ. Ask for a written breakdown, the date the figure is valid until and the payment instructions. If your payment date changes, request an updated figure before proceeding.
Also clarify how any scheduled repayment or payment still clearing will be handled. This avoids working from a figure that no longer matches the timing of your payment.
Will paying early actually save money?
Compare the interest and ongoing fees you would avoid with any early payout costs. Ask the lender to explain both figures; a smaller balance alone does not tell you the net saving.
Keep room in your budget for essential expenses and unexpected bills. If you are considering a replacement loan, compare its full cost too. Our guide to comparing car-loan quotes explains what to put side by side.
What should I confirm after the final payment?
Ask for written confirmation that the loan is closed and nothing remains owing. For a secured car loan, ask when the lender's security interest will be released. Confirm what happens to automatic repayments rather than assuming they stop immediately.
